Crows are quite common and are found throughout the world. They have become my companions on many picnics and day-outs.
I have found that engaging with them in a feeding session can be quite a fun addition to any picnic.
Watching the big birds swoop down to grab a morsel of food or toss a peanut into the air and watching them catch it leaves me astonished every time. The one thing that you have to be careful about is what you feed the crows.

Benefits of Peanuts for crows.
Peanuts are an excellent source of protein. Since a crow’s feathers are made of beta-keratin, a form of protein, eating foods rich in protein keeps their feathers look sleek and healthy.
These proteins are also beneficial in building muscles for smooth flight as well as for healing any sort of injuries.
Vitamin B7 (Biotin)
Biotin is necessary for good heart health and to prevent skin conditions and neurological disorders. Too much biotin can be harmful, however, peanuts contain small amounts of the vitamin so it is not detrimental.
Copper is essential for the skeletal and muscular systems. Hence, the presence of copper in peanuts helps avoid bone fragility and shell abnormalities.
Manganese is needed for shell formation, reproduction, and proper skeletal growth. Peanuts contain small amounts of manganese.
Peanuts also contain other vitamins and minerals like Vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, etc. which are important for the crows to have a healthy body.
Do crows eat raw peanuts?
Raw peanuts are the best form to feed crows. Processed peanuts of any kind mean that they have added salt or sugar and chemical preservatives. Though crows can eat them, it is not good for them.
Raw and unsalted peanuts are natural and healthy for crows and you can feed them these without any hesitation.
Can crows eat salted peanuts?
Though crows can eat salted peanuts, it is not advisable to feed them these. Salted peanuts, along with salt also contain preservatives and other chemicals. These are unnatural and can be detrimental to the health of the crows.
Similarly, sugary, smoked, flavored, and chocolate-covered peanuts should be strictly avoided.
Will crows eat peanuts in the shell or unshelled?
Crows can eat both shelled and unshelled peanuts. Unshelled peanuts are easier for them to eat. If they get unshelled peanuts, they use their sharp beaks to break open the peanut shells and then eat the nuts inside.
Sometimes crows carry away the peanuts to enjoy them later. In this case, the peanut shells are quite easy for them to carry.
Is it safe to feed wild crows?
Before you try feeding crows in your area, make sure you know about the laws regarding feeding wildlife there.
In many areas, it is forbidden to feed wildlife and in others, it is prohibited because when crows are fed, they may continue to frequent the places where they get food. This makes them nuisances.
All this said and done, feeding crows is safe and can be quite fun. Crows are inquisitive and intelligent birds. If you feed them regularly, over time they will probably warm up to you and begin to recognize you as well.
What else can I feed crows?
Crows can be fed with boiled eggs (you can give these to the whole, peeled or cut into small pieces) and meat like ham, sausages, and chicken. You can also feed them fruits and berries and even insects.
The only thing to remember is that you shouldn’t feed them artificial or processed food. Though they will eat everything, processed food is unnatural and can be harmful to their health.
Peanuts are a great snack to carry if you want to befriend crows.
Crows like most nuts and that include peanuts. However, you should remember that crows should be fed only raw peanuts. Processed peanuts like salted ones are not good for them.
Before you start feeding crows in your area, ensure you know the laws regarding feeding wildlife in that area. If it’s allowed then with a bit of patience and a lot of peanuts, you will definitely make friends among the crows!
