How Long To Keep Pigeons In Cage | For New Pet Pigeon Owners

You can count pigeons among the smart birds that socialize well. They can be both indoor and outdoor mates.

Pet pigeons find it hard to live a cage-free life completely. But, that doesn’t mean you won’t let your furry friends go out of the enclosure at all.

Pigeons need ample time outside of cage.

Many people regularly let pet pigeons fly outside. The time is usually between early morning and before noon, and early evening and before dark.

Moreover, other than a cage, you can present spacious aviaries to pigeons where they won’t mind spending quality time.

How long to keep pigeons in a cage?

New pet pigeon owners often ask this question. They remain confused as birds like pigeons are not meant to be caged 24 hours.

Though every bird needs an open sky to fly and enjoy life, yet people pet beautiful birds and let them live in a cage.

Pigeons need to exercise and interact daily. It is a mandatory part of their life.

So, you must arrange for an appropriate cage for adopted or rescued pet pigeons. This cage will work as their home base. It is safe. Let your pigeons out every day for socializing and exercising, and train them to come back into the cage or aviary.

It is a general habit of pigeons in a home to walk more than flying. For walking around, these pretty birds need space.

What should be an ideal cage for pigeons?

New pet pigeon owners will find this guidance very useful.

Indoor pigeons need large and spacious cages that can allow them to move around and flap wings freely.

Pigeons like to spend time on small and flat-raised platforms for the purpose of sticking perches. Plus, they can rest comfortably on these platforms.

For indoor pigeons:

A safe and spacious cage is ideal for pigeons living indoors. If you have a couple of pigeons, then a cage of at least 42 inches or 106.68 cm wide, 30 inches or 76.2 cm high, and 27 inches or 65.58 cm deep will work fine.

Get an easy-to-clean pigeon-friendly liner to cover the bottom of the particular cage. You can use a plastic mat or a yoga mat, and cut it according to the cage’s measurement.

If your home is free from rats, cats, dogs, or other kinds of animals, then widely-spaced bars work fine.

But, if you have a canine friend or a cute cat living with you, then protect your pigeons by keeping them in a cage with thinly spaced bars.

Pigeons have small heads. So, they need bar spacing from a minimum of ½ inch or 1.27 cm to 5/8 inch or 1.59 cm.

For outdoor pigeons:

Keep outdoor pigeons inside an aviary to save them from predators. If you have two to four birds, arrange for a space measuring at least 7 feet or 2.13 m by 4 feet or 1.22 m. It should be a minimum of 6 to 7 ft or 1.83 to 2.13 m high.

Rectangular and long spaces are ideal for pigeons of any size. Larger-sized pigeons, especially King Pigeons need outdoor aviaries.

You must install wildlife-proof mesh having tiny openings of 1.27 cm or even less. The sloped roof must be solid. Keep an attic for nesting or roosting.

It is best if you cover a small exposed area of the roof with wildlife-proof mesh to allow light and a bit of rain in the aviary and let pigeons enjoy nature.

Remember that you must not confine your bird in a tight box-like cage. Allow the pigeons to move, flap wings, fly a bit, and communicate with other pigeons inside the aviary. They must be happy and comfortable inside.

How to maintain a cage or aviary for pigeons?

Clean pigeon poop regularly from wooden or cement floor.

You can keep slightly big pebbles or rocks inside the cage.

The pebbles must be larger than 3.81 cm or 1.5 inches.

If you want to construct an aviary outside your home, choose a cement floor to discourage predators to dig in. Hardware mesh also works well. Cover the mesh with drain rock or earth for protecting pigeons’ feet.

Where should you locate pigeons’ cages?

  • Pigeons should get natural sunlight and fresh air. Hence, place the cage accordingly.
  • Consult with your neighbors as they can get disturbed by the birds’ noise.
  • Pigeons can’t see properly in low light. Also, indoors are dimmer than outdoors. So, place the cage outside your room to let the feather buddies enjoy ample sunlight along with additional light provided by you.

What should you avoid to keep pigeons healthy?

  • Do not keep pigeons’ cages near the kitchen. Pigeons can have serious health issues or even die if they inhale damaging chemicals, fumes, smoke, etc.
  • Refrain from lighting candles, using scents, room fresheners, or any chemically infused items near your pigeons.
  • Do not cook in non-stick or Teflon-coated pans. Teflon releases toxic fumes that can cause severe damage to your beautiful birds and kill them.

Let your pigeons explore your home:

If you have two or a few pigeons, allow them to explore your home. If they respond to your presence and commands and eat directly from your hand, they have become comfortable and can roam or fly a bit inside your home.

Pigeons need adequate time outside of the cage to be physically and mentally healthy.
