How to Take Care of Baby Pigeons?

Parents know how to take care of their babies. If your pigeon pair gave birth to chicks, let them handle their babies. They can do it. Both male and female pigeons can produce milk, but very few of them actually do so. For a baby, parental milk is the best food.

In case your pigeons are not producing milk, you have to take responsibility. There are milk recipes available in the market, which you can purchase after the vet’s recommendation. The milk recipe results in liquid formula and can be given to little ones.

They are unable to sip it. You need a small syringe to feed them. Fill it with milk and lubricate the mouth of the syringe, then lower it down into the chick’s mouth. You need to do it 2-3 times a day when kids are very small.

The little birds grow very fast, and after 5 days, you will need a bigger syringe. This routine must last for 2-3 weeks until they are old enough to learn to eat seeds. You can place a few of them, and the little ones can try pecking at them.

You can also try feeding them seeds by hand, so they learn it. At this age, they must also learn to drink water. Place a water bowl, so they dip their beaks. Also, remember to keep it clean. Until they get 6 weeks old, they need special care.

Feeding the Pigeons

To provide proper nutrition to your baby pigeon, you must give them quality food. Seeds are the best thing to feed pigeons. Pelleted feeds are always recommended. Pigeons eat different kinds of seeds with joy.

Apart from this, vegetables and fruits should also form part of your pigeon’s food. You can chop them finely and mix them up with their seed feed.

Apples, pears, mashed boiled eggs, breadcrumbs, spinach, carrots, rice, etc., are healthy foods that will only enhance the nutritional value of the market-bought feed you usually feed to your pigeon.

To fulfill their calcium needs, you can give them oyster shells.  Calcium or other food supplements also won’t do any harm. Consult your vet and include it in your pet’s diet.

Disease Prevention

Only a healthy pigeon can bear healthy babies. So, rather than curing their problem on time, you must prevent the diseases.

Pet pigeons have a different level of immunity, and they cannot survive the bacteria, which often come accompanied by wild pigeons. So, don’t let your pets come into contact.

Also, the pigeons spend most of their time in their loft, so they must be kept clean and dry. It should be airy and safe. Place it at some height, so your pigeons are not threatened by cats or dogs.

Clean food and water with enough food supplements keep them healthy and also boost their immunity.

Training your baby pigeon is essential to build good habits and keep them healthy. Don’t let them anywhere near muddy water or gutter.  They should not feed on specific leaves and weeds. Don’t let them wander out on the lawn all on their own.

Training them is an absolute necessity. Take hard actions if you need, like not feeding them for once and tell them that they are being punished. They understand and learn.
